① SOR/2018-186 Playpen Safety RegULations
② SOR/2018-186 Playpens Regulations
Canada’s playpen regulations first came into effect in September 1976 and underwent a major revision in 1991. To address changes in playpen design and functionality over the years, better meet consumer needs, enhance child safety, and align more closely with U.S. regulations, Health Canada approved the new playpen regulation SOR/2018-186, which replaces the previous SOR/2016-189 regulation.

SOR/2018-186 applies to playpens manufactuRED and sold in Canada.
1. Coatings:
① Total lead content ≤ 90 mg/kg
② Migration of antimony, arsenic, cadmium, selenium, or barium ≤ 0.1% (5% HCl, 20°C, 10 min)
③ Mercury is prohibited
2. Textiles or Other Flexible Materials:
On an assembled playpen, for components made of textiles or other flexible materials that are permanently fixed to rigid structures, gradually apply a force of 130 N in the direction most likely to cause tearing or detachment of the component and maintain the force for 10 seconds. Repeat for all applicable components. During testing, components should not tear or detach.
3. Seams:
All stitching on playpens or accessories must use lock stitching.
4. Shearing and Crushing:
Playpens or accessories must not have any parts accessible to children that can be sheared or crushed.
5. Mesh Opening Size:
On an assembled playpen, use a probe with a hemispherical tip of 6.3 mm diameter. Gradually apply a force of 22 N perpendicular to the plane of the mesh at 10 evenly distributed openings. The probe tip must not pass through these openings during testing.
① Test according to CAN/CGSB-4.2 No. 27.5.
② Mount the textile sample on a suitable apparatus at a 45° angle to its longitudinal axis.
③ Apply a flame source to the lower edge of the sample for 1 second (flame contacts the sample at ignition point).
④ Observe and measure the time required for the flame to travel 127 mm along the sample and record the flame spread distance and burning behavior.
Flame spread time must be greater than 7 seconds, and one of the following conditions must be met:
① No raised fibers on the surface; or
② Raised fibers are present, but the underlying fibers ignite or fuse during testing
