Introduction to IP Protection Rating Testing:

IP stands for Ingress Protection.

The IP protection rating system provides a method to classify products based on the degree of dustproofing, waterproofing, and collision resistance of electrical equipment and packaging. This system has been recognized by most European countries and was drafted by the IEC (International Electrotechnical Commission).

The protection rating is mostly expressed by "IP" followed by two digits, which are used to specify the level of protection.

  • The first digit indicates the range of the equipment's resistance to micro-dust, or the extent to which people are protected from hazards in a sealed environment. I represents the rating for preventing the entry of solid foreign objects, with the highest level being 6.

  • The second digit indicates the degree of waterproofing of the equipment. P represents the rating for preventing water ingress, with the highest level being 8.

IP Ingress Protection Classification Requirements:

IPXX Dustproof and Waterproof Ratings

Dustproof Rating (Represented by the first X)

  • 0: No protection

  • 1: Protection against the ingress of large solid objects

  • 2: Protection against the ingress of medium-sized solid objects

  • 3: Protection against the ingress of small solid objects

  • 4: Protection against the entry of solid objects greater than 1mm

  • 5: Protection against harmful dust accumulation

  • 6: Complete protection against dust ingress

Waterproof Rating (Represented by the second X)

  • 0: No protection

  • 1: Water droplets dripping onto the enclosure have no effect

  • 2: When the enclosure is tilted up to 15 degrees, water droplets dripping onto the enclosure have no effect

  • 3: Water or rainwater falling onto the enclosure from a 60-degree angle has no effect

  • 4: Liquid splashed onto the enclosure from any direction has no harmful effect

  • 5: Washing with water causes no harm or damage

  • 6: Suitable for environments inside ship cabins

  • 7: Can withstand immersion in water for a short period of time (1m)

  • 8: Long-term immersion in water under a certain pressure

Example: If the IP protection rating of a display instrument is marked as IP65, it means that the product can completely prevent dust from entering and can be washed with water without causing any harm.

IP ingress protection testing Standards:

iec 60529; EN 60529; IEC 62208 / EN 62208; EN ISO 20653

Protection against water droplets

Object probe, sphere diameter of 50mm, shall not fully enter

Vertically falling water droplets shall not cause damage

2

Protection against solid foreign objects of 12.5mm diameter and larger

2

Protection against water droplets when the enclosure is tilted 15 degrees

Object probe, sphere diameter of 12.5mm, shall not fully enter

Vertically falling water droplets shall not cause damage when the enclosure is tilted at any angle up to 15 degrees on either side

3

Protection against solid foreign objects of 2.5mm diameter and larger

3

Protection against splashed water

Object probe, sphere diameter of 2.5mm, shall not fully enter

Water splashed from both sides of the vertical line at a 60-degree angle shall not cause damage

4

Protection against solid foreign objects of 1.0mm diameter and larger

4

Protection against spraying water

Object probe, sphere diameter of 1.0mm, shall not fully enter

Water sprayed toward the enclosure from any direction shall not cause damage

5

Protection against dust

5

Protection against water jets

It is impossible to completely prevent dust entry, but the amount of dust entering shall not cause harm to the equipment

Water jets aimed at the enclosure from any direction shall not cause damage

6

Dust-tight

6

Protection against powerful water jets

No dust shall enter the enclosure under a low pressure of 20 mbar

Powerful water jets aimed at the enclosure from any direction shall not cause damage

Note:

The diameter of the object probe should not pass through holes in the enclosure

7

Protection against short-term immersion in water

When the enclosure is immersed in water for a short time under standard pressure, the amount of water ingress shall not cause damage

8

Protection against long-term immersion in water

Can be immersed in water under specified conditions, there should be no ingress that can cause...
