Is ROHS part of UL? Are they the same?

Many European and American customers often see products marked with RoHS or UL logos when purchasing electronic products. However, these two represent completely different certification systems and focus on different priorities.

Is ROHS part of UL? Are they the same?(图1)

What is ROHS?

ROHS (Restriction of Hazardous Substances Directive) is an environmental protection regulation formulated by the European Union (EU) for electrical and electronic products.

Its core objectives are:

① Restrict the use of hazardous substances such as lead, mercury, cadmium, hexavalent chromium, polybrominated biphenyls (PBB) and polybrominated diphenyl ethers (PBDE) in products;

② Protect the environment and human health;

③ Ensure that products meet environmental protection requirements when sold in the EU market.

④ In short, ROHS is an environmental compliance requirement.

What is UL?

UL (Underwriters Laboratories) is a safety testing and certification organization in the United States.

The focus of UL certification is:

① Evaluate the electrical safety, fire risk and mechanical structure safety of products during use;

② Ensure that products meet the safety standards of the US and Canadian markets.

In other words, UL is a safety certification, not an environmental certification.

Summary of Core Differences

Comparison   Items

ROHS

UL

Main   Focus

Environmental   protection and restriction of hazardous substances

Product   safety in use

Nature

EU   regulatory requirement

Third-party   certification in the United States

Scope

Material   composition

Electrical   and structural safety

Mandatory   or Not

Mandatory   for the EU market

Mostly   market access or customer requirement for the US market

Conclusion

ROHS and UL are not the same:

① ROHS focuses on whether the materials are environmentally friendly;

② UL focuses on whether the product is safe.

The two often appear on qualified products simultaneously because one represents environmental compliance and the other represents safety and reliability. For manufacturers hoping to enter the European and American markets, ensuring that products meet both ROHS and UL standards is essential to be more competitive in the market.
