What Is EU EMC Compliance testing?

Electromagnetic Compatibility (EMC) testing is a mandatory product compliance requirement in the European Union, verifying that electronic devices can operate normally within an electromagnetic environment without interfering with other equipment. Meeting EMC standards is vital to being granted ce mark certification and accessing EU markets in accordance with Electromagnetic Compatibility Directive 2014/30/EU.

Core EMC Standards in the EU

emc testing within the European Union follows EN standards, which can be divided into two main categories for emc certification:

Generic Standards

These specifications apply to devices without specific product standards, such as:

1. EN 61000-6-1/2: Defines electromagnetic environments (industrial/residential)

2. EN 61000-4 series: Establish immunity test methods such as electrostatic discharge or radio frequency interference testing.

Product/Industry-Specific Standards

These specific product standards cover specific product categories such as:

a. Household and IT Equipment:

EN 55032 (radiated emissions)

EN 61000-3-3 (voltage fluctuations)

b. Lighting Equipment:

EN 55015 (radiated emissions)

EN 61547 (immunity)

c. Medical Devices:

EN 60601-1-2 (EMC specific requirements, which also must conform with MDR)

What Products Require EU EMC Testing?

The European Union requires emc compliance testing on most powered devices—low voltage as well as wireless equipment is covered under its scope—that are powered. These typically include:

1. Consumer Electronics: Refrigerators, Air Conditioners, Washing Machines and Microwave Ovens

2. Medical Devices: Blood pressure monitors and ECG machines (both subject to MDR regulations)

Critical EMC Test Items in the EU

EMC testing can be divided into two broad categories—Emission (EMI)and Immunity (EMS)—that aim to assess both how much interference a device produces as well as its tolerance against external sources.

1. Emission (EMI) Testing

This testing measures electromagnetic interference produced by devices to ensure they conform with EU limits.

a. Conducted Emissions (CE):

This measuring tool quantifies interference currents produced on power or signal lines by harmonic currents emitted via power lines or signal lines (e.g. harmonic currents).

b. Radiated Emissions (RE):

Measures electromagnetic energy emitted into space between 30MHz–1GHz range to assess radio interference levels.

2. Impedance Control System (EMS) Testing

These tests simulate electromagnetic disturbances to make sure the device continues functioning as it should.

a. Electrostatic Discharge (ESD):

Simulate static discharge caused by human contact (±8kV contact discharge). Use ESD Testing to identify any device malfunctions.

b. Conductive RF Disturbances (CS):

Simulates base station signals which couple through power lines into devices at 80 MHz–2.7 GHz frequencies to test immunity.

c. Surge Testing:

Simulate transient overvoltages generated by lightning strike or power switching (±1kV to ±4kV), to assess device resilience.

EMC Testing Process with CNAS-Accredited Labs (e.g. JJR Laboratory)

Chinese manufacturers can complete EMC testing and obtain reports through CNAS-accredited labs like JJR Laboratoryfor EU EMC certification purposes. The process entails:

1. Pre-Test Consultation and Preparation

① Identify applicable EMC standards (please consult EUR-Lex)

② Prepare technical documentation such as circuit diagrams, BOM lists, user manuals etc.

③ Provide sample units (typically two to three fully functioning products; additional may be necessary for specialty categories)

2. Laboratory Testing

JJR Laboratory (a CNAS-accredited lab with internationally recognized reports) conducts laboratory testing according to selected EN standards, such as excessive emissions. If noncompliances such as these arise (such as shielding and filter requirements), root cause analysis will need to take place as well as corrective actions (such as shielding or filters).

3. Test Report and CE certification

Following successful testing, the lab issues an EMC test report with test items, results, and verdicts. Technical documentation is then submitted to a Notified Body or authorized EU representative who issues a Declaration of Conformity (DoC) that allows ce marking to occur.

Testing Duration:

Standard Products (Including Remediation): 2–4 Weeks

Complex Products (e.g. medical devices): 6–8 Weeks

EMC compliance is the gateway for products to accessing the EU market, with emission and immunity tests serving as its backbone. Partnering with accredited laboratories like JJRensures reliable testing services with efficient results.
