Australian GEMS (MEPS) Energy Efficiency Certification

Views :
Update time : 2025-05-15

After the transition from MEPS to GEMS, the previous state-level authorities in Australia no longer accept registrations. All registrations must now be completed through the Australian GEMS RegULator.

Note:If the client is based in New Zealand, registration can be done through the New Zealand Regulatorwithout any registration fee. Products registeRED in New Zealand can also be sold in Australia, but they must first be imported into New Zealand before being exported to Australia.

Basic Information about Australian GEMS Certification

1. Certification Type:Mandatory

2. Technical Requirements:240V, 50Hz; energy efficiency testing

3. Certification Mark:Energy Label

4. Factory Inspection:Not required

5. Certificate Validity:5 years

Australian Energy Efficiency Requirements

Energy efficiency regulations in Australia consist of two main components:

1. Energy Labeling Requirements

2. Minimum Energy Performance Standards (MEPS)

Products Requiring Mandatory Energy Labeling:

1. Refrigerators

2. Washing Machines

3. Clothes Dryers

4. Dishwashers

5. Household Air Conditioners (Single-phase)

6. Televisions

Products Required to Meet MEPS (Minimum Energy Performance Standards):

1. Three-phase Air Conditioners (Window type)

2. Electric Water Heaters

3. Three-phase Electric Motors

4. Fluorescent Lamp Ballasts

5. Fluorescent Lamps

6. Distribution Transformers

7. Commercial Refrigerators

8. Televisions

9. Set-top Boxes

10. Incandescent Lamps

11. Compact Fluorescent Lamps (CFLs)

12. External Power Supplies

13. Commercial Chillers for Buildings

14. Self-contained Air Conditioners

15. Transformers and Electronic Transformers for Low-voltage Lighting

General Process for GEMS Certification in Australia:

1. Submit product samples to a testing laboratory for energy efficiency testing.

2. After the product passes testing, the lab will issue a test report.

3. Use the E3 website to submit the registration application.

4. The submitted report will be reviewed by Australian authorities.

Estimated Timeframe:

The GEMS certificate is typically issued within approximately one month.

If the report is rejected, the fees are non-refundable. However, the report can be revised and resubmitted without incurring additional fees.

Testing and Registration Timeline:

1. Testing Duration:5–15 working days (depending on product type)

2. Registration Time:Approximately 4–6 weeks

3. Registration Entity:Usually completed by an Australian-based client.

If registering through an agent, the Australian client must provide an Authorization Letterfor the agent.

Once registered, the product information can be found on the official energy efficiency website:
