How to Obtain an MSDS/SDS Report

An MSDS (Material Safety Data Sheet) is a comprehensive legal document detailing the characteristics of chemicals, which chemical manufacturers or sellers are required by law to provide to their customers. It provides 16 sections of information, including physical and chemical parameters, explosive properties, health hazards, safe use and storage, spill response, first aid measures, and relevant laws and regulations.

Under What Circumstances is an SDS/msds report Required?

When a product meets any of the following conditions, the product supplier must compile an SDS and pass it down the supply chain to importers, downstream users, and distributors:

1. When the substance or preparation is classified as dangerous according to Directive 67/548/EEC or 1999/45/EC, or if the preparation is not classified as dangerous but contains a certain proportion of Substances of Very High Concern (svhc)* or other dangerous components.

2. When the substance is Persistent, Bioaccumulative, and Toxic (PBT) or very Persistent and very Bioaccumulative (vPvB) according to the criteria in Annex XIII of the reach regulation.

3. When the substance is identified as an SVHC for reasons other than the conditions listed above.

Additionally, even if the above conditions are not met, companies are required to pass down an SDS along their supply chain when an importer proactively requests it, or when industry standards for substance classification and labeling become more stringent.

Classification of Dangerous Goods in MSDS/SDS Reports

Although regulations on the classification of dangerous goods vary by country, they are generally divided into the following 9 classes according to international regulations:

• Class 3: Flammable Liquids

• Class 4: Flammable Solids, Spontaneously Combustible Substances, and Dangerous When Wet Materials

• 4.3 Substances which, in contact with water, emit flammable gases

• Class 5: Oxidizing Substances and Organic Peroxides

• 5.1 Oxidizing Substances
