ISO 3533-2021 Testing and Certification Services

Compliance with the ISO standard is voluntary for businesses, so not all products in the market will adhere to the iso 3533 standard immediately. - Genital-shaped adult food items, toys, collectibles, soap, keychains, party gifts, or edibles

Testing or Certification Title: Sex Toys  

This document specifies safety and user information requirements related to the materials and design of products intended for sexual use.  

It covers only finished products designed for direct contact with the genitals and/or anus.  

The document does not generally apply to products classified as medical devices, cosmetics, or support products, such as lubricants and massage oils.

Sex toys with heating functions must not exceed 118°F (approximately 47.7°C), as higher temperatures can cause first-degree burns.  

Any part of a toy that may come into contact with intimate human organs (genitals, anus) must be “smooth, without burrs or sharp edges.”

Users must be clearly informed that anal plugs or beads should not remain inside the body for extended periods. If self-removal is impossible, medical professionals should be able to extract them.  

Chastity cages and ring-type toys must be removable in emergencies using pliers or other common tools.

Other relevant standards include product packaging (use of biodegradable, eco-friendly materials), cleaning instructions for sex toys, and risk assessment protocols.

ISO 3533-2021Test Items:

1.General Requirements:

Evaluate the overall safety and suitability of the product to ensure compliance with relevant safety principles and user needs.

2.Mechanical Hazards:

Inspect the product’s mechanical structure for safety, such as the presence of anti-entrapment designs, locking mechanisms for detachable parts, and the safety of moving components.

3.Vibration:

If the product includes a vibration function, test the safety and stability of the vibration to ensure it does not cause harm to the human body.

4.Electrical Safety:

Include general electrical safety requirements. Products with electrical stimulation functions must undergo a third-party laboratory risk assessment based on the IEC 60601 series of standards.

5.Surface Temperature:

Check the surface temperature of the product to prevent burns caused by excessive heat.

5.Requirements for Wireless Remote-Controlled Products:

If the product has wireless remote control functions, test the safety and stability of the remote control operation.

6.Surface, Corners, Edges, and Protruding Parts:

Parts of the toy that come into contact with intimate human areas must be smooth, free of burrs and sharp edges, to prevent physical injury.

7.Material Requirements:

All materials that come into contact with mucous membranes must pass the iso 10993-5 cytotoxicity test. Additionally, they must comply with all applicable laws and regulations of the importing country, such as the restricted substances lists under RoHS, REACH, POP, etc.

8.Product Labeling:

The product packaging and user manual must contain necessary information such as instructions and warnings to guide users in the proper use of the product and inform them of potential risks.
