What is ROHS Testing?

RoHS is a mandatory standard enacted by European Union legislation. Its full name is the "Restriction of Hazardous Substances" Directive.

This standard was officially implemented on July 1, 2006. It is primarily used to regulate the material and process standards of electrical and electronic products, making them more conducive to human health and environmental protection.

Scope of Products for rohs testing

The scope of the RoHS Directive covers the electrical and electronic products listed in the catalog operating under AC 1000V and DC 1500V:

  1. Large household appliances: Refrigerators, washing machines, microwaves, air conditioners, etc.

  2. Small household appliances: Vacuum cleaners, electric irons, hair dryers, ovens, clocks, etc.

  3. IT and telecommunications equipment: Computers, fax machines, telephones, mobile phones, etc.

  4. Consumer equipment: Radios, televisions, video recorders, musical instruments, etc.

  5. Lighting equipment: Fluorescent lamps (excluding household lighting), lighting control devices, etc.

  6. Electrical and electronic tools: Electric drills, lathes, welding equipment, sprayers, etc. (excluding large-scale stationary industrial tools).

  7. Toys, leisure, and sports equipment: Electric vehicles, video game consoles.

  8. Medical devices: Radiotherapy equipment, electrocardiogram (ECG) testers, analytical instruments, etc.

  9. Monitoring and control instruments: Smoke detectors, thermostats, industrial monitoring and control machines, etc.

  10. Automatic dispensers.

Note: The RoHS Directive temporarily does not apply to categories 8 and 9. All of the above fall within the testing business scope of JJR LAB.

Material Preparation for RoHS Testing and Certification

  1. For heavy metal testing only: Approximately 5-10g of solid samples or 5-10mL of liquid samples are required.

  2. For brominated flame retardant testing only: Approximately 10-20g of solid samples or 10-20mL of liquid samples are required.

  3. For heavy metal and organic pollutant testing: Approximately 20-30g of samples are required.

  4. For other organic pollutant testing: Approximately 30g of samples are required.

  5. For samples testing only the plating (coating) parts: The approximate weight of the plating (coating) material part must be indicated. If the weight of the plating (coating) part does not meet the sample submission volume requirements, the raw material for the plating (coating) must be provided.

Factory Inspection for RoHS Testing

Factory inspections are not required, but generally, RoHS requires a one-year validity period. In reality, the rohs test report itself is solely based on the analysis of the product. As long as your product materials, production processes, and workflows remain unchanged, the test report can remain valid long-term.

RoHS Testing and Certification Cycle

  • RoHS Integration (Under 20 groups): 5 working days.

  • RoHS Integration (Over 20 groups): 7 working days.

Standard RoHS Testing: 5 working days.
