As people’s requirements for quality of life increase, the safety of food contact materials has received growing attention. As a common food contact utensil in daily life, the safety of ceramic cups is directly related to the health of users. This article elaborates on EN 1388-1:1996, a key standard for CE certification of ceramic cups, which specifies testing requirements for food contact materials.
EN 1388-1:1996 is an important European standard for ceramic articles intended to come into contact with food. It mainly assesses the migration of heavy metals such as lead and cadmium from ceramic products. The standard applies to all ceramic articles that may contact food, including tableware, cookware, storage containers, and others.
The test simulates actual usage conditions: samples are soaked in a 4% acetic acid solution at 22±2℃ for 24 hours, after which the levels of migrated lead and cadmium in the solution are determined.
1. For flat articles (internal depth ≤ 25 mm): lead migration limit = 0.8 mg/dm²
2. For hollow articles (internal depth > 25 mm): lead migration limit = 4.0 mg/L
3. For all article types: cadmium migration limit = 0.07 mg/dm² or 0.3 mg/L
• Sample preparation: brand-new, unused products must be used
• Test solution: must be prepared with analytical-grade acetic acid
• Soaking conditions: strict control of temperature and duration
• Analytical method: atomic absorption spectrometry is recommended
1. Select an EU-accredited laboratory for testing
2. Provide complete product technical documentation
3. Ensure test samples are consistent with mass-produced products
4. Establish a sound quality control system
Passing the EN 1388-1:1996 test not only fulfills CE certification requirements but also demonstrates responsibility for consumer health.
1. Strictly control the quality of raw materials
2. Optimize glaze formulations
3. Improve firing processes
4. Establish a regular inspection system
As European regulations are continuously updated, enterprises should also monitor revisions to relevant standards. At present, EN 1388-1:1996 remains the foundational standard for CE certification of ceramic food contact materials; however, enterprises are advised to also keep abreast of the latest requirements under regulations such as REACH.
Through this introduction, we aim to help relevant enterprises better understand the CE certification requirements for ceramic cups and prepare their products for access to the EU market. Only by strictly controlling product quality can manufacturers win consumer trust in the fierce market competition.
