What is the difference between CE EMC and CE LVD?

To sell electrical and electronic products in the EU market, CE certification is an indispensable passport. Both Amazon and other e-commerce platforms require products to have ce-lvd and CE-emc certification qualifications. So what are the differences between the two? How to complete the certification efficiently?

What is the difference between CE EMC and CE LVD?(图1)

Definitions and Core Objectives of CE-LVD and CE-EMC

CE-LVD (low voltage directive)

① Applicable voltage range: Electrical equipment with AC 50V-1500V and DC 75V-1500V.

② Core objective: Ensure the equipment does not cause electric shock, fire or mechanical injury under normal or faULt conditions, and protect user safety.

CE-EMC (Electromagnetic Compatibility Directive)

·        Core objective: Ensure the equipment can both avoid interfering with other devices (EMI) and resist external interference (EMS) in the electromagnetic environment, so as to guarantee operational stability.

What is ce emc (Electromagnetic Compatibility)?

CE EMC (Electromagnetic Compatibility) refers to the ability of a device or system to not generate unnecessary electromagnetic interference in its operating environment and to withstand electromagnetic interference from other devices. In short, ce emc certification ensures that the product will not interfere with the normal operation of other devices during use, nor will it be affected by external electromagnetic waves.

Within the EU, electromagnetic compatibility is regulated by the Electromagnetic Compatibility Directive (2014/30/EU). This directive requires all electronic devices sold in the EU to comply with EMC standards to ensure that the electromagnetic interference of the devices does not affect other devices or pose a threat to health and safety.

What is ce lvd (Low Voltage Directive)?

CE LVD (Low Voltage Directive) specifies safety requirements for electrical equipment, especially those related to the voltage and electrical safety of electrical products. CE LVD ensures that the product will not cause potential safety hazards such as electric shock or fire to users during normal use. The goal of LVD is to ensure the safety of electrical equipment within its operating voltage range.

The Low Voltage Directive (2014/35/EU) lays down the basic safety requirements for electrical equipment sold on the European market. These requirements include electrical safety considerations that must be taken into account during the design, manufacture, use and maintenance of the equipment. Generally, LVD applies to electrical equipment with voltages between 50V and 1000V (AC) and 75V and 1500V (DC).

Test Content Comparison: Safety vs. Compatibility

Certification   Type

Test   Focus

Typical   Test Items

CE-LVD

Electrical   safety, mechanical safety

Insulation   resistance, earth continuity, leakage current, temperature rise test,   protection level

CE-EMC

Electromagnetic   compatibility

Conducted   emission, radiated emission, electrostatic discharge immunity, harmonic and   voltage flicker test, surge immunity test, power frequency magnetic field   immunity test, voltage dip test, etc.

Differences in Scope of Application

① CE-LVD: Applies to all equipment operating within the rated voltage range, such as household appliances, lighting, power tools, medical equipment, etc.

② CE-EMC: Covers a wider range, including industrial equipment, civil equipment, multimedia equipment, household appliances, lamps and other devices. However, passive components (such as resistors and capacitors) usually do not require certification.

Regulatory Updates and Validity Period

① CE certification has no fixed validity period, but it needs to be re-evaluated in line with EU regulatory updates.

② LVD: Directive 2014/35/EU

③ EMC: Directive 2014/30/EU

CE-LVD guarantees product safety, and CE-EMC ensures electromagnetic compatibility. Both are indispensable. Before listing on EU e-commerce platforms (such as Amazon), it is crucial to complete both certifications.
