What Are Crochet Toys?

Crochet toys are handcrafted children's toys made from yarn, cotton thread, or other textile fibers using crochet techniques. They come in various forms such as dolls, animal figures, and miniature fabric models. These toys are characterized by their softness, skin-friendliness, and diverse designs. Combining decorative and interactive qualities, crochet toys are especially loved by families with young children.

Which Crochet Toys Require ce testing?

Under the European Union's Toy Safety Directive(2009/48/EC), any crochet toy intended for children under 14 years old and sold in the EU must undergo CE certification. The following types are especially subject to testing:

1. Toys with Movable Parts: For example, dolls with removable eyes or buttons, which can easily detach and become small parts.

2. Toys Made of Chewable Materials: Such as baby soothing crochet teethers or drool cloth accessories.

3. Functionally Designed Toys: Toys that include features like lights or sounds (with electronic components), or adjustable crochet puzzles.

4. Toys That Contact Sensitive Areas: Soft crochet toys meant to come into contact with the mouth or skin, such as teething decorations.

Note: Decorative crochet items not intended for children (e.g., adULt-oriented wall art) do not require CE testing.

CE Testing Standards and Key Requirements

To meet CE certification, crochet toys must comply with the EU's EN71 series standards. The main focus areas of the testing include:

1. Mechanical and Physical Safety (EN71-1): This includes testing for tensile strength of seams and attachments, drop impact resistance, prevention of small parts detachment (parts under 31.75mm), and absence of sharp points or edges that could cause injury.

2. Chemical Safety (EN71-3): This test ensures the limited migration of 19 heavy metals including lead, cadmium, and mercury from toy coatings and materials, preventing toxicity if a child chews the toy.

3. Flammability (en71-2): Assesses the burning rate of fabrics and fillings, which must not exceed 30mm/second to prevent rapid ignition.

4. Electrical Safety (EN62115, if applicable): If the toy includes electronic components, it must pass battery compartment security, insulation, and temperature rise tests to prevent overheating or leakage.

All tests are conducted under simulated real-life usage conditions, such as pulling or chewing, to ensure full lifecycle safety.

Efficient ce compliance Process at China JJR Laboratory

The China JJR Laboratory, accREDited by CNAS, offers a streamlined one-stop CE testing service for crochet toys. The process typically includes the following steps:

Step 1: Define Product Category and Applicable Standards

Determine the target age group (e.g., 0–3 years or 3–6 years), and match with the correct EN71 version. Currently, EN71-1:2014+A1:2018 is widely used.

Step 2: Sample Preparation and Pre-Inspection

Submit 5 to 10 complete product samples, including packaging. A preliminary check is conducted to identify issues like sharp edges or poorly attached small parts. You may also perform internal tensile tests in advance.

Step 3: Laboratory Testing

JJR conducts all necessary tests based on EN standards—mechanical, chemical, flammability, and electronic (if applicable). Test data is recorded in detail, and the process usually takes 7 to 10 working days.

Step 4: Technical Documentation Compilation

Prepare supporting documentation, including product specifications, a full material list (with yarn composition and dye test reports), product design diagrams (highlighting locations of small parts), and the official test reports.

It is crucial to provide proof that materials meet reach regulation requirements, especially confirming the absence of SVHC (Substances of Very High Concern).

Step 5: ce marking

Under the self-declaration mode, the manufacturer signs a Declaration of Conformity (DoC)and must retain all technical documents for at least 10 years.

For toys containing complex electronics, a Notified Body in the EU may be required to review the product. JJR can assist in coordinating this process if needed.

CE testing is the essential "safety passport" for crochet toys entering the European market. The process centers around proving mechanical durability, chemical safety, and fire resistance according to en71 standards. By choosing an accredited laboratory like China JJR, manufacturers can complete compliance efficiently and ensure their products are safe and market-ready for global distribution.
