Yesterday, a colleague called to ask about preparing a product for the US market involving biocompatibility, specifically regarding the FDA's requirements for biocompatibility. Coincidentally, the FDA updated its recognized consensus standards last week. Although only one standard was updated, it is the sole standard concerning biocompatibility: ISO 10993-18 regarding chemical characterization.

However, the FDA currently accepts a total of 25 standards related to iso 10993. Among these, the FDA only partially recognizes many of the ISO 10993 standards. Therefore, everyone needs to check the specific recognized scope and the reasons for any exclusions.

Taking iso 10993-1 as an example, the FDA only partially recognizes it. Both the non-recognized portions and the reasons for non-recognition are explained in detail.

Important Note: If your product is ultimately destined for the US market, you need to re-plan the biological evaluation and testing of your product by combining the following guidance documents and the detailed explanations of partial recognition for consensus standards.

Modifications to the Matrix: The familiar matrix table in ISO 10993-1 has been modified in the FDA guidance document. For detailed information, please refer to the specific FDA biocompatibility requirements.
Workflow for Biological Evaluation: If you wish to understand the FDA's evaluation requirements for product biocompatibility in detail and learn how to conduct the biological evaluation process, the guidance document provides a comprehensive workflow.

The FDA divides the complete biological evaluation process into four steps, with detailed requirements provided for each step.

Final Advice: Do not assume that your product will be fine simply because it has undergone testing related to ISO 10993 standards. You must combine product characteristics with the FDA's special requirements to formulate a detailed testing plan that satisfies both FDA requirements and ISO 10993.
