What is ROHS Testing?

The RoHS (Restriction of Hazardous Substances) Directive restricts the use of hazardous substances in electrical and electronic products. The EU RoHS 2.0 Directive (2011/65/EU) regulates 10 hazardous substances to ensure product environmental safety.

Enterprises exporting to markets such as the EU, the US, and China must pass rohs testing. Choosing a professional rohs testing laboratory is the first step toward product compliance.

The first 6 items are substances regulated by RoHS 1.0, and the last 4 items are new additions in RoHS 2.0. JJR Laboratory covers the testing of all 10 items.

RoHS Testing Methods

XRF Rapid Screening

X-ray Fluorescence (XRF) spectrometry is a non-destructive testing method used to rapidly screen for heavy metals such as lead, mercury, cadmium, and chromium. It is suitable for the initial screening of large batches of samples, providing results in minutes.

ICP-OES / ICP-MS Accurate Quantification

Inductively Coupled Plasma Optical Emission Spectrometry (ICP-OES) and Mass Spectrometry (ICP-MS) are used for accurate quantitative analysis. They have low detection limits and provide accurate data, meeting regulatory requirements.

GC-MS Organic Compound Testing

Gas Chromatography-Mass Spectrometry (GC-MS) is used to detect phthalate organic compounds. The four phthalates in RoHS 2.0 must be tested using this method.

Reference Standards

JJR Laboratory performs testing in accordance with the IEC 62321 series of standards, ensuring that the reports are globally recognized.

Which Products Require RoHS Testing?

  • Large household appliances (refrigerators, washing machines, air conditioners)

  • Small household appliances (vacuum cleaners, microwave ovens, kitchen appliances)

  • Information technology equipment (computers, printers, routers)

  • Consumer electronics (mobile phones, cameras, headphones)

  • Lighting equipment (LED fixtures, bulbs)

  • Electrical and electronic tools (electric drills, welding equipment)

  • Toys and sports equipment (containing electronic components)

  • Medical devices (newly regulated under RoHS 2.0)

  • Monitoring and control instruments (newly regulated under RoHS 2.0)

  • Automatic dispensers

Frequently Asked Questions (FAQ)

How much does rohs testing cost?

The cost depends on the number of samples, material complexity, and testing items. A single-material sample costs around $70 to $210, while multi-material samples are charged per testing point. Contact JJR Laboratory for an accurate quotation.

How many samples are needed for testing?

Usually, 20-50 grams of a representative sample is sufficient. For complex products, a complete BOM (Bill of Materials) list must be provided, and the laboratory will confirm the sampling plan after evaluation.

How long is the report valid?

RoHS testing reports do not have a fixed validity period. However, re-testing is required if raw materials or manufacturing processes change. It is recommended to update the report annually.

What if the product fails the test?

JJR Laboratory provides failure analysis services to locate the source of the non-compliant substances and assists enterprises in replacing materials or improving processes until compliance is achieved.

Can RoHS testing be done internally?

XRF screening can be done internally by the enterprise, but the accurate quantification required by regulations must be completed by a third-party RoHS testing laboratory. Choose JJR Laboratory to ensure the report is authoritative and valid.

What is the difference between XRF screening and chemical testing?

XRF is fast and non-destructive, making it suitable for initial screening; chemical testing (ICP/GC-MS) has high accuracy and is the final judgment basis recognized by regulations. Combining both balances efficiency and accuracy.

What is the difference between China RoHS and EU RoHS?

China RoHS ("Management Methods for the Restriction of the Use of Hazardous Substances in Electrical and Electronic Products") regulates 6 substances and adopts a conformity assessment system. EU RoHS regulates 10 substances and adopts a self-declaration method. JJR Laboratory supports both tests simultaneously.
