What certifications are required for electronic products in Indonesia?

In Indonesia, the main certifications requiRED for electronic products include SNI certification, POSTEL certification, and K3L certification. Each certification has its specific scope, required documents, and procedures. This article provides a detailed explanation of these certifications.

 

POSTEL Certification

POSTEL certification is mandatory for products that transmit and receive telecommunications signals over the radio spectrum (similar to China's network access license). The purpose is to ensure that telecommunications devices work properly without interference when integrated into Indonesia’s telecommunications network. This certification is issued by the Indonesian Ministry of Communication and is valid for three years. Products that require POSTEL certification include smartphones, laptops, televisions, wireless speakers, Wi-Fi routers, and other devices using the radio spectrum.

 

Required Documents:

- Business license and related qualification documents

- Detailed technical specifications of the product

- Samples and test reports (if tested in a foreign lab recognized by the Indonesian Ministry of Communication, there’s no need to go through Indonesia's testing process)

 

Application Process:

1. Collect required documents

2. Prepare samples

3. Conduct testing (if not tested in a recognized foreign lab)

4. Obtain test report

5. Submit certification application

6. Ministry review

7. Amend documents (if necessary)

8. Pay government fees

9. Issue POSTEL certificate

 

SNI Certification

SNI is Indonesia’s only applicable national standard, aimed at ensuring product quality and safety. SNI certification is divided into two types: SNI-1b and SNI-5, with SNI-5 being applicable to electronic products. Products requiring SNI certification include gas stoves, printers, electric fans, refrigerators, washing machines, air conditioners, electric water pumps, etc. The SNI-1b certificate is valid for 6-12 months, while the SNI-5 certificate is valid for 3-4 years and can be extended but requires an annual review.

 

Required Documents:

- Application form

- Importers: company articles of incorporation, judicial approval, business identification number, business license, tax card and registration certificate, organizational structure, etc.

- Manufacturers: production process flowchart, user manuals, list of raw materials and inspection records, list of production equipment and maintenance records, list of testing equipment and calibration certificates, quality plans, inspection records for semi-finished and finished products, management review plans and reports, product photos, technical drawings, and other required documents such as ISO 9001 certification, etc.

 

Application Process:

1. Register product trademarks in Indonesia (or use a trademark registration letter if not registered)

2. Submit an application to an SNI certification body

3. Initial inspection of the manufacturing facility and sample collection by SNI officials

4. Product testing in Indonesia’s national laboratory

5. Implement corrective actions based on test resULts (if necessary)

6. Issuance of SNI certificate

7. Affix the SNI label on recognized products

8. Monitoring and periodic sample inspections

 

K3L Certification

K3L certification refers to certification for security, safety, health, and environmental aspects. Electronic products related to security, safety, health, and the environment, whether domestically produced or imported, must obtain a K3L certification number before being sold in the Indonesian market. The certification is valid for five years. Products that require K3L certification include MICrowaves, electric drills, saws, grinders, vacuum cleaners, hair dryers, and others.

 

Required Documents:

- Company articles of incorporation, judicial approval, business identification number, business license, tax card, and registration certificate

- Product manuals, product photos

- Product test results report

- Other relevant documents as required for the specific product

 

Application Process:

1. Product testing

2. Submit the product test results report

3. Apply via the Indonesian government's electronic licensing system

4. Once approved, obtain the K3L number

5. Affix the K3L registration number on the product packaging or label before sale

 

Before entering the Indonesian market, electronic products must choose the appropriate certification based on product characteristics and ensure that all necessary documents are prepared. The processes, required documents, and validity periods of each certification vary, so companies are advised to thoroughly understand the requirements and consult relevant professional agencies or government authorities in Indonesia before proceeding."
