Global acceptance of adult toys has been increasing, but due to the lack of product standards, the quality of sex toys varies significantly. With the rapid growth of the user base, incidents of sexual toys causing harm to the human body have been increasing year by year. As a result, the Swedish Standards Institute (Sis) began working on establishing the first international standard for the design and safety requirements of adult products.

iso 3533:2021, titled Sex toys - Design and safety requirements for products in direct contact with genitalia, the anus, or both, was released on September 29, 2021. For an industry with long-term robust growth and an estimated annual sales value of $300 billion, this is a groundbreaking, global standard. Most agencies expect this industry to continue its strong growth. However, this has largely been an unregulated field until now. This new standard is an important tool for manufacturers to ensure the quality of their products. ISO 3533:2021 was developed within the International Organization for Standardization (ISO), making it valid in 165 out of the 195 countries/regions worldwide. Standardization is a collaborative effort that must balance various interests to make the requirements as clear and useful as possible. The standard is voluntary to follow, primarily aimed at manufacturers, but retailers and consumers can also refer to it when purchasing sex toys.

ISO 3533:2021 is voluntary, primarily targeting manufacturers, but retailers and consumers can refer to it when buying sex toys. Products meeting this standard can carry corresponding labels on their packaging as a guarantee of product quality. The implementation of this standard has had a positive impact on the adult products industry, improving product safety and quality levels, and helping consumers identify and select safe and reliable adult products. Meanwhile, the standard also provides manufacturers with clear production guidance and quality control standards, helping improve their competitiveness and market position.
