US Crib Testing | ASTM & CPSC Compliance

Views :
Update time : 2026-04-29

JJR LAB provides professional US testing services for crib products. With CNAS and CMA qualifications, we cover ASTM standard testing and CPC Certification support for full-size cribs, play yards, toddler beds and other juvenile furniture, helping products enter the US market smoothly.

Regulatory Background of US Crib Testing

A crib is a furniture product for infants and toddlers, classified as a high-risk category under strict supervision by the U.S. Consumer Product Safety Commission (CPSC).
Under the Consumer Product Safety Improvement Act (cpsia), all consumer goods intended for children aged 12 and under must comply with relevant safety standards and obtain a Children’s Product Certificate (CPC) based on third-party laboratory testing before being sold in the US market.

Legal Risks of Non-Compliance

Mandatory product recall ordered by CPSC, with all recall costs borne by the enterprise

Substantial civil fines (up to hundreds of thousands of US dollars)

Being blacklisted as an importer, affecting future customs clearance

 Severe damage to brand reputation

Therefore, introducing compliance testing at the product design stage is a prerequisite for exporting to the United States.

Service Scope

JJR LAB’s current US standard testing coverage for crib products is as follows:

Common Non-Conformity Items & Case Analysis

Based on CPSC recall data over the years, typical non-compliance issues for cribs are summarized below:

Risk Type

Specific Manifestation

Typical Cases

Finger / Limb Entrapment

Excessive side rail gap or design defect

Multiple recalls due to infant finger entrapment

Head Entrapment

Insufficient side rail height or improper structural gap

Infant head trapped between side rail and mattress

Fall Hazard

Insufficient product strength or loose connectors

Side rail detachment leading to infant falls

Small Parts Choking

Easy detachment of screws and decorative parts

Accidental ingestion of small parts by infants

Strangulation Hazard

Improper design of crib bumpers and cords

Infant strangled by bumper cords

Chemical Hazard

Excessive lead content or harmful coating substances

Product recall due to excessive paint lead content

Prevention Suggestion

Conduct risk assessment at the product design stage, adopt compliant raw materials, and ensure safe structural design to effectively reduce testing failure rate and recall risks.

Relationship Between CPC Certificate & Test Report

What is a CPC Certificate?

CPC (Children's Product Certificate) is a compliance declaration document issued by manufacturers or importers based on third-party laboratory test reports.

How Test Reports Support CPC Application

1. JJR LAB issues CPSC-recognized third-party test reports

2. Manufacturers/importers draft CPC certificates based on report content

3. The CPC certificate must be kept together with the test report for inspection by CPSC or customs at any time

FAQ

Do play yards and cribs adopt the same testing standards?

No. Full-size cribs follow ASTM F1169 / 16 CFR 1219; play yards follow ASTM F406 / 16 CFR 1221. There are differences in testing items and structural requirements.

What tests are required for non-full-size cribs?

Non-full-size cribs comply with ASTM F406 / 16 CFR 1220, covering structural safety, gap dimension, side rail strength, mattress fitness and other tests.

What is the validity period of the test report?

The test report itself has no fixed expiry date. Retesting is required if product design, materials or production processes are modified. CPSC recommends regular test updates to maintain continuous compliance.

How many samples need to be sent?

Normally 1-2 complete samples per model. The exact quantity depends on test items and will be clearly confirmed before contract signing.

What if the product fails testing?

JJR LAB will issue a detailed non-conformity analysis report and provide rectification suggestions. One free retest is available for rectified samples under the same test item.

Does JJR LAB provide EU standard testing besides US standards?

Yes. In addition to ASTM / 16 CFR US standards, we also offer EU standard testing such as EN 716 for cribs and other European certification services.
