To reduce electronic waste caused by the use of multiple incompatible charging technologies, the European Union proposed in 2019 to adopt a unified USB Type-C standard charging port. The proposal introduced the universal use of the Type-C connector by amending the EU Radio Equipment Directive (RED) 2014/53/EU.
In November 2022, the Official Journal (OJ) of the European Union officially published the amendment to the RED Directive 2014/53/EU — Directive (EU) 2022/2380.
According to Directive (EU) 2022/2380, starting from 28 December 2024, the following 12 categories of radio equipment must be equipped with a USB Type-C port and comply with the relevant standards:
1. Handheld mobile phones
2. Tablets
3. Digital cameras
4. Over-ear headphones
5. Headsets with microphones
6. Handheld video game consoles
7. Portable speakers
8. E-readers
9. Keyboards
10. Mice
11. Portable navigation systems
12. In-ear headphones
For the 13th category — laptops, the mandatory implementation date is 28 April 2026.
According to Directive (EU) 2022/2380, products using a USB Type-C port must comply with the following standards:
This standard specifies detailed requirements for electrical characteristics, physical layer, protocol layer, system policies, status reporting, and power rules. It defines how power-consuming devices and power-supplying devices negotiate and adjust voltage, current, and charging direction.
For products with charging specifications > 5V, > 3A, or > 15W, compliance with both standards is required:
EN IEC 62680-1-2 (USB PD)
EN IEC 62680-1-3
This standard covers three main aspects: Type-C cables, Type-C connectors, and the Type-C protocol (functionality). It specifies pin definitions, mechanical structure requirements, dimensional requirements, and electrical performance requirements. It also defines device host/client roles, power roles, power capabilities, handshake protocols, and state machines.
For products with charging specifications < 5V, < 3A, or < 15W, compliance with EN IEC 62680-1-3is required.
Directive (EU) 2022/2380 mainly addresses Type-C requirements for wireless terminal devices. For Type-C requirements related to chargers themselves, the EU will implement them through the updated External Power Supply erp directive, which is expected to be published in early 2025.
